What is Surface Coating?
Surface coating can be defined as a process in which a substance is applied to other material in order to change the surface properties such as color, gloss, resistance to wear or chemical attack or permeability without changing the bulk properties. The protection provided by a coating of the base material relies upon the integrity of the coating and its freedom from faults, cracks, scratches, and pores. The component materials may be chosen for its machinability, forging, forming and strength properties etc. Subsequent surface coating of the component material provides protection for an extended working life. Surface coatings include materials such as paints, varnishes, enamels, oils, greases, waxes, concrete, lacquers, powder coatings, metal coatings and fire-retardant formulations.
